Temporary Anchorage Devices, also known as TADs, are used in certain orthodontic cases in order to shift the teeth into a straighter position when braces alone can’t do the job, leading to a much more efficient treatment. The titanium, screw-like device can be combined with braces, or sometimes it can be used as an alternative to headgear.
Frequently Asked Questions About TADs
How are TADs placed?
First, Dr. T. C. Hardy at Hardy Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics will evaluate your teeth and determine if TADs are necessary for your orthodontic treatment. Then he will carefully numb your gum tissue and jaw area before inserting the TADs into your jawbone. You should become comfortable and accustomed to the device after a day or two. Dr. Hardy will remove the TADs once your orthodontic treatment is complete, or when he feels they are no longer necessary for straightening your teeth.
How can I make TADs more comfortable?
If you are uncomfortable after having your TADs installed, we advise you to take over-the-counter pain relief medication to alleviate your symptoms. However, if you continue to feel discomfort a couple of days after your procedure, please talk to a member of our experienced orthodontic team for further recommendations, or to make a follow-up appointment with Dr. T.C. Hardy.
How do I clean my TADs?
You can continue your normal oral hygiene habits of brushing and flossing. We recommend you brush your teeth as frequently as three times a day and use a mouthwash with antimicrobial ingredients at least twice daily.
